Man with a bloody mouth

He remembered happy times, peaceful times, when the world was full of joy and bliss and love and brotherhood. Long, long ago, before they had fallen – so long ago that he could scarcely recall any particular memory. It seemed like a dream, living without competition, without oppression, without fear or hatred, but it was real. He knew it was. It was the way the world was meant to be, had been created to be. It was a time when he had been loved and sustained by the one who created him instead of hated and denied attention by his dark master, and he had been surrounded by brothers who loved and supported him instead of being hated and plotted against by the other fallen. The memories were so vague, and it saddened the demon that he could not recall them. The master must be suppressing the memories and the truth; after all, who would want to remain in the darkness when there was light? He had been stifled and suppressed, choking on the heavy, smoky midnight that was his existence, for so long that he could scarcely imagine any other way now.

This excerpt immediately follows the one from last week’s HDH post, continuing the short story called “A Demon’s Fate” written for one of my demons from Bound by Blood. Over the last few weeks we learned that he is discontent regardless of the great esteem he holds in the eyes of his master. If you’re curious, feel free to go back and start from the beginning. Want more? Don’t worry. I plan to use parts of his story for my hooks for the next few weeks.

Bound by Blood is my gay paranormal erotic romance series set in modern-day NYC. I hope to be able to publish the first book in the series later this year.

Hump Day Hook is a weekly blog hop where participants post one paragraph from a published book or work in progress to hook readers.
